HDFC Bank Imposes Sub-Caps on SmartBuy Brand Voucher Reward Points
HDFC Bank has implemented a new monthly limit on the accelerated reward points customers can earn via SmartBuy brand vouchers. This restriction applies even if the cardholder hasn't exhausted their overall monthly SmartBuy limit.
This policy change impacts several premium HDFC Bank credit cards, including the Infinia, Diners Black, and Regalia ranges. Customers who frequently purchase shopping and gift vouchers through SmartBuy to optimize their rewards will feel the most impact. Notably, the bank updated these limits directly on the SmartBuy portal without issuing a formal press release or notifying customers directly.
What Exactly is Changing?
Previously, cardholders could maximize—or entirely exhaust—their monthly SmartBuy reward limit just by purchasing brand vouchers. Effective July 1, this is no longer an option. While the overall SmartBuy reward limit remains the same, HDFC Bank has carved out a strict sub-cap specifically for points earned via brand vouchers.
This limits maximizing points via vouchers for popular retailers like Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, and Myntra.
How It Impacts Cardholders (Infinia Example)
- The New Sub-Cap: An Infinia cardholder can now earn a maximum of 3,000 accelerated reward points per calendar month from brand vouchers. The card's overall monthly SmartBuy cap remains at 15,000 reward points.
- Earning the Balance: If a customer maxes out their 3,000 points on brand vouchers, they can still accumulate the remaining 12,000 points through other avenues, such as booking hotels or flights.
- The Reverse Scenario: If a customer has already earned 14,985 points through hotel bookings, buying a brand voucher afterward will only yield 15 points, reaching the hard 15,000 monthly limit.
Card-Wise Cap Breakdown
As expected, the maximum cap for brand vouchers (Gyftr/Woohoo) falls within the overall maximum limits. Here is the full breakdown across different card variants:
| HDFC Bank Card Type | Overall Maxcap (Per calendar month) | Brand Vouchers Maxcap (Gyftr/Woohoo) (Per calendar month) | Overall Maxcap (per Day) |

| Diners Black (Reward Points) | 7,500 | 3,000 | 2,500 |
| Regalia, Diners Privilege, BizPower (Reward Points) | 4,000 | 3,000 | 2,000 |

Note: In any calendar month, the total accelerated benefits earned by a user are subject to these sub-caps within the overall limits.
Industry Perspective: A Shift in Credit Card Strategies
Financial experts suggest this adjustment points to a wider industry trend where banks are scaling back reward programs and urging users to diversify how they use their credit cards.
"The HDFC SmartBuy devaluation is a clear signal that credit card rewards in India are becoming more dynamic and less predictable," says Ashish Lath, Founder & CEO of SaveSage. "Moves like this show that the smartest credit card strategy is no longer about relying on a single card. Instead, it is about having the right mix of cards and redemption options."
Other Important Credit Card Changes from July 1
Alongside the SmartBuy update, a few other credit card rules came into effect on July 1:
- HDFC Lounge Access: HDFC Bank tightened the domestic airport lounge access rules for Regalia Gold and Diners Privilege cards. To unlock three complimentary domestic lounge visits for a given quarter, cardholders are now required to spend at least Rs 60,000 in the preceding calendar quarter.
- SBI Card Updates: SBI Card modified the reward programs for its PhonePe SBI Credit Card PURPLE and SELECT BLACK editions. Effective July 1, SBI introduced monthly caps on reward points and expanded the list of transaction categories that no longer qualify for rewards.
